Shri ragam is an ancient ragam in the Carnatic tradition. It is also written as Sri or Shree.[1] This scale does not have all the seven swaras (musical notes) in the ascending scale.[1]Shree is the asampurna melakartha of Kharaharapriya, the 22nd Melakarta rāgam.[1][2] It is the last of the 5 Ghana rāgams of Carnatic music.[1] It is a pleasing and popular rāgam.[2] It is considered to be highly auspicious.

Notably, Carnatic Shree takes the lower madhyamam being the asampurna scale of Kharaharapriya. It is not related to the Hindustani raga, Shree.
Structure and Lakshana[edit]
Ascending scale is same as Madhyamavati scale, shown here with shadjam at C
Notes in descending scale is that of Kharaharapriya scale, shown here with shadjam at C
Shree is an asymmetric rāgam that does not contain gāndhāram or dhaivatam in the ascending scale. It is a audava-vakra-sampurna rāgam (or owdava, meaning pentatonic in ascending scale),[1] where vakra indicates the zig-zag nature of jumping notes in descending scale. Its ārohaṇa-avarohaṇa structure (ascending and descending scale) is as follows (see swaras in Carnatic music for details on below notation and terms):
This scale uses the notes chatushruti rishabham, sadharana gandharam, shuddha madhyamam, panchamam, chatushruti dhaivatam and kaisiki nishadam.

Status: ALPHA. Syntax and API are subject to change without notice.
Supported browsers: Chrome, Safari and Firefox.
![]() Usage
Include the script directly from the library URL like this -
It doesn't matter where within the page you include it.
The script will search your page for
pre tags with the class carnot_section and render them using SVG.
You can see a rendering of the below example here.Ganarajena Rakshitoham is a larger example of using Carnot withina blog post to display the prescriptive and descriptive notationof a whole composition.
If you're using Markdown, including a section to be typeset byCarnot is a breeze. Any Markdown code block that beginswith
tala pattern = ...blah-blah... will be considered asa Carnot section and typeset accordingly.
Examples - Traditional Carnatic exercisesSyntax
A 'carnot_section' is wrapped in a
pre tag whose class is set to carnot_section . The body of the pre gives the notation in plain text with the syntax described below.
The notation is considered in 'paragraphs' where all lines of a paragraphare expected to be of the same symbolic duration.
'Lines' may be of the following types -
PropertiesCarnatic Music Notations Download Firefox Freetala pattern
A
tala pattern specification consists of a sequence of '|', ',' and spacecharacters. While a ',' counts aksharas of a tala, '|' marks major angas. '|'indicators are rendered by drawing vertical lines. Space is significant and canbe used to visually group sub-akshara notes as in the sample. However, multiple spaces are collapsed into a single space. Furthermore, '|' isrendered as a single vertical line and '||' is rendered as a double verticalline, but all others such as '||||' will be rendered just like '||'.
The '_' character is also permitted and behaves exactly like '|' except that itdoesn't cause a line to be drawn. This is useful to align aksharas of longtalas whose avrtams get split into multiple lines.
There is no restriction on the types of talas you can encode using this scheme, meaning you aren't limited to the 35 talas, or whatever.
Example:
aksharas per line
The value of this property is expected to be a natural number greater than 0.It specifies how many of the tala aksharas a line should occupy.
phrases
If a property with the key
phrases is attached to a 'paragraph', it istaken to provide information about how to group svaras for that paragraphinto phrases. The syntax of the value is simple - it consists of a sequenceof _ characters some of which are grouped using ( and ) to indicatethat they belong to a phrase. For this property, spaces don't matter at all. Here is an example (rendered)-
stretch
Give a floating point value that will horizontally stretch the spacing used inthe rendering. A value of '2.0' will be twice as wide as a value of '1.0'.
Style controlsMusic Notations And Symbols
If you place a
pre section with class carnot_style , then the propertiesspecified in that section are loaded into a style object that is passed to therenderer. If this section is absent, then default styling applies.
